“Our earth is only one polka dot among a million stars in the cosmos. Polka dots are a way to infinity...”
In her approach to the animation, as well as accompanying poster, Lily was inspired not only by first-hand experience of the exhibit, but by Kusama’s wider portfolio of work also. Whilst the colours and pulsing glows featured were largely drawn from Infinity Mirrored Room – Filled with the Brilliance of Life, the polka dot forms are a classic signature of hers Lily knew she wanted to reference. A single polka dot serves as a motif throughout the animation; a gateway transporting viewers to Kusama’s world.
Furthermore, the use of negative space in the poster design reflects the infinity rooms’ juxtaposition of their cold white shells and immersive, colourful interiors.
